During this time of year, many find Indian Corn in local markets. In a Montessori classroom, we use Indian Corn not for decorating but as a preparation for writing. Using tweezers develops eye-hand coordination and control of movement while strengthening the child's pincer grasp - all of which will be crucial to a child's success when they begin writing.
