Dear Perrysburg families,

This year, Perrysburg Campus will be supporting Graham’s Foundation for our 3rd annual Thanks and Giving Celebration. Graham’s Foundation, founded by current West Side parents Nick and Jennifer Hall, is in celebration of their son, Graham. Graham and his twin sister, Reece (a Lower Elementary student) were born 15 weeks premature. Reece was in the hospital for four months before she was able to come home. Graham lived for 45 short days. Graham’s Foundation empowers parents of premature babies through support, advocacy and research to improve the outcomes for their preemies and themselves. We are looking forward to sharing with the children an act of great kindness and the gift of giving to those in need. One way Graham’s Foundation supports parents of preemies is to give NICU (neonatal intensive-care unit) Care Packages. Our goal is to collect 100 new children’s books that can be included in the care packages from today until November 23rd. Says Jennifer, “One of the many challenges of having a baby born early is that the nurses and doctors seem to provide all of the care for your baby, and as a parent you are left feeling helpless. When Reece and Graham were in the NICU, we looked for ways to parent and to make sure that they knew us. One of the ways we did that was by reading. We read books aloud by their isolettes. We didn’t know if it would make a difference, but we figured it wouldn’t hurt, and we knew one thing – it helped us. We felt as if we were doing something. It helped us feel as if we were doing something typical.” We will be donating the books to Graham’s Foundation at our Thanks and Giving Celebration Sing-A-Long on Tuesday, November 18th , beginning at 10:45 a.m. in the Great Room. We would love to have you join your children, Nick, and Jennifer in this special celebration. Please feel free to bring siblings not in school, grandparents and anyone else who wishes to share in this tradition! Thank you for supporting our Thanks and Giving Celebration!

Sincerely, Perrysburg Teachers and Staff

About Organizing the Chaos at the Toledo Campus

Maria Montessori believed children have a need and a sensitive period for order. Come learn how simplifying your life and organizing the chaos can help you and your child succeed.  Learn SIMPLE fixes to everyday issues. Organization ideas for toys, books, pictures. Easy ways to keep track of important information. And why Pinterest is NOT always the answer.

Autumn is in the air in the Pearl Room. We have many new additions to our shelves that tie in with the season. There are many activities on the practical life shelf that involve sorting, tonging, and pouring Halloween items.  We have an activity out on a work table where the children hang small Halloween ornaments on a festive tree. We have a basket of Halloween nesting dolls.  We also have a basket with five small pumpkins in it for the children to enjoy acting out a favorite book, Five Little Pumpkins, which we have already been reciting during circle time.  But our most complex new work is pumpkin scrubbing. There are many steps involved to complete this work cycle activity and the underlying goal to this activity is getting the children use to using a circular motion with their wrists. Using this motion sets them up for writing!

As the cool weather begins to creep up on us, we’d like to point out the art of a toddler putting on his coat. You may encourage your child to follow these simple steps at home to be consistent with us at school.

  1.  Lay the coat on the floor or table with the tag side up against the child’s feet or tummy. You may hear the child say “tag or toe” or “tag to tummy”.
  2. The child then places hands into each sleeve and grabs the cuff.
  3. The child lifts both arms into the air and the coat automatically “flips” on.
  4. The coat is now on and all that is needed is zipping up the coat.   It is very easy to do and the best part of the experience is that it is accomplished by the child!

Sweet September Sundae Begins at 2 p.m.

See You Today

West Side Montessori is excited to share its 40th Birthday surprise with ALL its families at Sweet September Sundae today. The festivities begin at 2 p.m. at the Toledo Campus (7115 Bancroft) with fun activities for the WHOLE family – bouncy houses, games, student-led trail walks, music! Bring your folding chairs and blankets to picnic on pizza, watermelon, ice cream sundaes, and, of course, BIRTHDAY CAKE.

At 3 p.m., Lynn Fisher, WSM’s founder and head of school, will gather everyone on the McMaster Middle School porch for her surprise announcement! Following the announcement, the activities will continue until 4:30 p.m.

The weather looks perfect, so plan on joining us for the annual fall tradition!
