Spotlight Post: Tricia Miller-Purvis

Tell us a little bit about yourself?

My name is Tricia Purvis. I have four children: Christiana (25), Melena (19), Kenton (16) and Kerim (9). My husband and I also have two Newfoundlands and three cats, all rescues. I have a Bachelor’s Degree in Education from Bowling Green State University and a Montessori-Based Master’s from Siena Heights and am AMS certified. I also serve the Columbus Montessori Teacher Education Program as a Field Consultant. Outside of school I enjoy walking, watching my favorite football team, home remodeling and boating. I am Basic Keelboat and Coastal Cruising Certified through the American Sailing Association.

What is your favorite Montessori quote?

“The child is both a hope and promise for mankind.”

I truly believe that children have unlimited potential for good. This is why our role as educators coming along side parents is so important. I love that we educate the whole child, not just focusing on academics, but the spirit of the child as well.

Why do you choose to work at West Side?

A family member enrolled her daughter, now a West Side graduate, in the Little House program. She told me I had to check out West Side. I did, I applied, I was hired and have been here ever since. I love West Side and am starting my twentieth year here.

What is the most important life lesson you like to share with your students?

Though I teach the younger levels, I want to start imparting the importance of perspective to my students. Helping them gauge what is a big deal vs. a temporary situation is valuable. I feel it helps them with coping skills and being good problem solvers in the future. I try to help my students start to develop a sense of the people and world around them. Thinking about how their actions impact others and our environment. Also, manners are also a must. “Please” and “Thank you” are repeatedly practiced.

How do your students inspire/motivate you?

I have never had two days alike at West Side. Every day is a new adventure. As long as the kids keep learning, so do I.
