Cardinal Room is a Lower Elementary classroom for levels 1-3 on the Toledo Campus. Terie Alvarez and Deb Kelleher are the classroom’s co-teachers.

Social Development for Ages 6-9


As you peer through the window of the Lower Elementary rooms, you notice your child (or someone else’s) wandering from friend to friend visiting. You then focus on a group of students chatting while they sit around a rug of materials. Seated at their tables are two more students “working” on math facts…giggling and talking. Don’t panic. Maria Montessori recognized that the ages of 6-9 were years of much social growth.

The children are learning to navigate through some often difficult situations in order to build life long character traits. They are building the man or woman they are to become. When you see two children chatting at their table, they may be problem-solving or collaborating on a work that is difficult. A group around a rug conversing may be doing research, practicing a presentation, reviewing with one another, or if they are chattering loudly, even catching a spider for a habitat! The child visiting others is asserting themselves, greeting others, possibly showing grace and courtesy as they take a lost pencil to a friend or loan a pencil sharpener to someone because they saw the need and filled it. Or, all of these examples could just be the children socializing for the sake of socializing because they need that too! Rest assured that we are keeping tabs and redirecting as needed, if needed. However, we also are allowing the students to develop socially, a crucial piece of the whole child (from the Bluebird blog 2014-2015).

In the 6-9 year-old classroom Montessori classroom, the children are moving to the second of four planes of development. Intellectual growth is slow and steady. At this time they are forming their moral compass, strengthening their ideas about justice and fairness, and becoming aware of others in their lives.  It is a time of learning to navigate relationships and social situations.

happy-world-peace-dayThe Montessori culture curriculum serves to expose the children to the physical and cultural needs of all humans throughout the Earth. They begin to see themselves as community members and global citizens. They take part in learning about cultural celebrations, traditions, religions, and art. Additionally, the children study those individuals that came before us that have contributed to our understanding of the universe.

Sweet September Sundae Begins at 2 p.m.


See You Today


West Side Montessori is excited to share its 40th Birthday surprise with ALL its families at Sweet September Sundae today. The festivities begin at 2 p.m. at the Toledo Campus (7115 Bancroft) with fun activities for the WHOLE family – bouncy houses, games, student-led trail walks, music! Bring your folding chairs and blankets to picnic on pizza, watermelon, ice cream sundaes, and, of course, BIRTHDAY CAKE.

At 3 p.m., Lynn Fisher, WSM’s founder and head of school, will gather everyone on the McMaster Middle School porch for her surprise announcement! Following the announcement, the activities will continue until 4:30 p.m.

The weather looks perfect, so plan on joining us for the annual fall tradition!


All lower elementary students will be headed to the Ottawa National Wildlife Refuge on Wednesday, Sept. 30th.  Students will explore the Lake Erie wetlands at ONWR and at the nearby Magee Marsh and Black Swamp Observatory.   Students will have the opportunity to use nets and catch water critters, see bird tagging, and learn about our special Lake Erie animals.  If we are lucky we may see a bald eagle too!

Students will travel via Sylvania bus. We will leave West Side at 8:45 and return around 2:30-2:45.   Parent help is not needed on this trip.  There is no fee for this trip. Thanks anyway!

Students will need a sack lunch and disposable drink.  They will also need to wear clothing that fits the weather forecast for the day.

We have done this trip before and it was a great experience for the students.  It ties in nicely with our zoology unit this year.

Children from ages 6-12 years old ask endless questions and ponder complicated issues. Dr. Montessori concluded that the only approach to learning that would truly satisfy children at this developmental level is to give them a picture of the whole universe and the where-with-all to see how the parts of the whole are interconnected.

Join us on Thursday, Sept. 17, at 3:45 p.m. to learn more about Montessori’s unique curriculum at the elementary level. Current Lower Elementary and kindergarten parents are encouraged to attend; parents at all levels are welcome. Child care is provided during the presentation at no charge. Please indicate in the child care sign out book that you attended the event.

We are immersing ourselves in the Cardinal classroom and how respectable and responsible our children are growing together. We get to experience their honest, loving, and generous exchanges with each other, thus creating a peaceful environment.

We begin each morning with a greeting, quiet, and observant, as we witness our friends walking in to settle into their work. Ask your children to be EFFICIENT at home, a word we are learning to use as we complete the work cycle.
