Congratulations to the West Side Montessori’s Middle School students who earned two first place awards at the 25th annual Student Watershed Watch (SWW) Summit. The eighth level earned Overall Best Presentation (video below) and the seventh level received Most Creative Display.

The event was held on Wednesday, Nov. 19, at the University of Toledo Scott Park Campus. WSM was one of 16 schools that participated in the first part of the SWW, performing field work and evaluating water quality parameters. About 150 students from nine schools were able to participate in the second part which is the Student Summit.

SWSlogoFor the Student Summit, classrooms present their results from the stage and also prepare a table top display. Their oral presentations are evaluated by a panel of judges who work in environmental or educational fields. Teachers evaluate the table top displays. Students also attend workshops exploring professions in environmental science. Speakers represented the Toledo Zoo, Metroparks of the Toledo Area, and the Ohio EPA emergency response team.

The keynote speaker for the 2014 Student Summit was Tom Henry, a Blade reporter specializing in environmental issues. The emcee was Jim Blue, a managing editor at WNWO NBC 24.

The Student Watershed Watch is supported by government and business sponsors. This support provides training for the teachers, testing supplies, and tools. Sponsorship also enables TMACOG to host the summit and maintain webpages which post the student research.

The eighth level students earned Overall Best Presentation at the Student Watershed Watch this week. The students presented their research in a Magic School Bus skit.

The seventh level students received the Most Creative Display award for the Magic School Bus presentation board. The board is on display in the west hallway at the Toledo Campus.

This year, the Middle School students traveled in a bus to North Carolina with an other Montessori school from Crystal Lake, Illinois. The fun and educational trip lasted five days and was a wonderful experience.

On Wednesday, October 15, the Middle School class took a trip to the Toledo Botanical Gardens. The students did multiple water tests on the lake and stream, consisting of turbidity, pH, nitrates, dissolving oxygen, and water temperature. The students also, completed forms on the physical appearance of the lake and stream. Each student did their own test three times to ensure accuracy.

After hours of hard work, middle school students as well as alumni worked together to build Lower Elementary’s very own Octoball pit. The students met after school dug out the grass, laid down the turf, and put the walls up. As you can see, the Lower Elementary students are loving Octoball.
