Shohan Shetty (Class of 2012)
This past spring, WSM alum Shohan Shetty (‘12) graduated with College Honors from Washington University with a major in Neuroscience and a minor in Anthropology.
We caught up with Shohan and he shared the following update. “During this coming year, I'll be doing a year of service through AmeriCorps, working with OSU's Wexner Medical Center as an Assistant Coordinator for Opioid Community Engagement. OSU is partnering with other universities throughout Ohio to assemble a research team focused on achieving a decrease in opioid misuse and overdose deaths. I'll be collaborating across these teams to establish and relay best practices and ensure that this information gets integrated at the local level through community policies.”
After his AmeriCorp experience, Shohan plans to attend medical school. He just sent out his applications and, with a score in the 99th percentile on the MCAT (Medical College Admission Test), we bet he’ll have at least a couple of options!
When asked if he felt anything from his West Side experience contributed to his academic and leadership successes, Shohan had this to say, “I think that one thing that really made a difference for me was how our teachers respected us and treated us as their peers. Having their respect and trust helped me to develop my own confidence, and...gave me more comfort in taking the initiative on things."
"The community at West Side is unmatched. My old classmates are still amongst my closest friends and we have an active group chat between us. Around them it was never considered nerdy to take an interest in school or what we were learning--in fact nothing was more cool. And so there is a culture that had been there since long before us that we got to benefit from."
