Eagle Scouts AND National Merit Scholarship Semifinalists!

Congratulations to Oliver and Elliott Zajac (WSM Class of 2019) on two recent major accomplishments!
In August, Elliott and Oliver were recognized for achieving scouting’s high rank, Eagle Scout. The boys became scouts in second grade and have been active over the years, working toward this goal. They had separate Eagle Scout projects, but both projects benefitted Mosaic/Baby U, a non-profit organization that opened a preschool for families in the Historic South neighborhood of Toledo. Oliver cleaned out and repainted two preschool classrooms and Elliott re-mulched a playground on the property and helped replace a fence around it.

Elliott and Oliver were also just named National Merit Semifinalists! More than 1.5 million high school juniors entered this annual academic competition for recognition and undergraduate scholarships by taking the PSAT as juniors. Only 16,000 students were named semi-finalists. Reflecting on this accomplishment Oliver stated, “Although we didn’t get a lot of experience with standardized testing at WSM, I felt, at least, that I was very prepared for the kind of reasoning and problem solving it requires.”

Amazing Outcomes Fun Fact
Seventeen students graduated from West Side in 2019 and four of those students were just named National Merit Semifinalists! In addition to Elliott and Oliver, congratulations to WSM alums Rohan Nambiar and McKenzie Collins. What an achievement!
