Lower Elementary Students Raise Money for Local Conservation Organization
Cardinal students raised $233.92 for the Green Ribbon Initiative!
Students in the Cardinal classroom decided to take matters into their own hands after learning about the Oak Openings and endangered species in the region. Dr. Todd Crail (University of Toledo Environmental Sciences) and Erika Buri (Executive Director of the Olander Park System) spoke to the students about the Oak Openings, habitat restoration efforts, and their role as ambassadors for conservation.
Using that presentation as a jumping-off point, students created collage images of the Karner Blue butterfly and wild lupine, the flowering plant the butterfly is dependent on. Artist and WSM parent Lee Fearnside created a silkscreen print of their work, and the students voted to use the print as a fundraiser for the Green Ribbon Initiative, a local conservation organization. The objectives of this project were to make art informed by science and to use their art to make a difference in their world.
